Mutomo Maarifa Centre was established in the year 2007. It is located in Mutomo district found in the southern part of Eastern Province, about 230 KM from Nairobi. Mutomo is a very arid area and it can go for over two years without experiencing any rainfall which has major implications for the population of the district. In order to store water, there are several innovations including earth dams, water tanks, terrace troughs, digging up of dried river beds, boreholes and rock catchments
The Community Knowledge Centre (CKC is run by the organizations w Arid Lands Information Network (ALIN) and the Communication Commissions of Kenya (CCK), and hosted by the Mutomo Mission Hospital. It has two committees whose mandate is the day-to-day management of the centre. The committees are the Focal Group and the Advisory team, both of which are headed by chairpersons.
The Centre offers a number of services to the community which include library services, internet services, computer classes and printing services among others. Community members visit the centre and seek information on farming, agriculture, environmental conservation, livestock and human health, HIV/AIDS management and market information.
The centre has a public noticeboard where information can be posted for the community to view. The most posted include job vacancies from both within and out of the district, market information, any breaking news in the locality and any other information which is of value to the community.
